8/22/2023 0 Comments Ds 2d xl wordor bros![]() Then came the 3D plan, with the 3DS and 3DS XL, the latter getting a couple of revisions during its time. The hardware went through a series of revisions, starting with the DS, then the DS Lite, then the DSi and DSi XL. Released in late 2004, when the PlayStation 2, original XBox, and GameCube were the current console generation, it persisted through to pre-orders for the PlayStation 5. On the flip side, the DS line had a hell of a run. The end was always coming some day, and I haven’t really played anything on my 3DS XL for ages, but it is still a bit of a sad note. ![]() In our family we played some other games on the DS, but it was primarily the Pokemon console, and those core titles were always best sellers on the platform. Though, to my mind, the real death knell of the DS line was Game Freak moving core Pokemon RPG development to the Switch. But then came the Switch Lite and the writing was on the wall. The Switch was not supposed to replace it, not according to Nintendo at least, and the initial Switch model was certainly bulky enough compared to the pocket sized DS line to support that argument. So ends Nintendo’s dual screen handheld line. If you go the US Nintendo site, mention of the DS line of handheld console has been completely scrubbed, save for the support area, where it now lives in the “Other Systems” category with the Wii, the Wii U, and older generations of the DS line. The Verge reported that at some point in the last week or so Nintendo updated their Japanese site to indicate that the remaining units in the DS lineup, the 3DL XL, 2DS, and 2DS XL are “out of production.” The End of the Line for the DS Series at Nintendo ![]() This entry was posted in entertainment, Nintendo, Nintendo DS Hardware, Pokemon and tagged Nintendo 3DS, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire, Pokemon Bank, Pokemon Blue, Pokemon Sun and Moon, Pokemon Y on Februby Wilhelm Arcturus. The Switch Lite I now own hasn’t seen anywhere close to that much play time, but the platform is still young. That might have been past my peak of Pokemon play times… I put 243 hours alone on Pokemon SoulSilver on the old cobalt blue Nintendo DS Lite… but it was still an era that saw a decent amount of play time. So that is my time spent on the Nintendo 3DS. It was no substitute for an iPad… or even the average smart phone. I certainly only tried Netflix and YouTube to see what watching video was like on the unit. I doubt I spent much time with any of them on the 3DS. Pretty much the only non-Pokemon apps on the list were YouTube, Netflix, StreetPass Mii Plaza, and Mario Kart 7. I know I played through Pokemon Blue for the 20th anniversary of the series, there being a blog post about it. Given that it takes 30 or so hours to play through the main story of a Pokemon game, there is enough time left unaccounted for to have played a couple of those titles through. Other titles that they show beyond the top three include: Those three titles alone add up to 440 of the 518 hours of play time I recorded on the console. The PlayStation 3 launched in 2006.Īnyway, in order to soften the blow or to turn the pending demise of the platform into a moment of nostalgia, Nintendo has put up a page that allows you to explore your Nintendo 3DS and Wii U memories. But that is merely a stay of the inevitable execution. Even Sony, which supports their hardware long after it has been supplanted by newer models, eventually ends that support… though push back got them to extend support for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita stores after they initially announced those were to be turned off last year. This set off some wailing and gnashing of teeth, but if history is any sort of lesson, this was inevitable. This past week it was announced that the Nintendo was set to turn off Virtual Console support as of March 2023, after which no new purchases or fresh downloads would be allowed. As with the Wii before them, they are turning down services and trying to make it clear that the future, as far as their platform exclusive titles are concerned, is on the Switch. ![]() Nintendo is making it clear that the Wii U and 3DS gaming platforms are coming to the end of their supported life.
